After discussing all of the feature type race cars avaliable, Gustin was asked, "what would you want to use?" His reply was supercharged Pro-Mods on Nitro. Hence the idea of Nitro Coupes was born. The next step was to convince NHRA's competition committee that these short wheelbase door cars could be safe.

The first to accept this challenge was the rebels and mavericks who were the early Superstars of the Nitro Coupe Class, Jim Oddy-Frehahn, Bill Kuhlman, Dave Graytek, and Jeff Brozovich, many more would follow. As time moved on names like John Scialpi, Dan Nickelson, Rob and Randy Adler, Tommy Howes, Mike Swinarski, Bruce Boland, Mel Eaves, and Wayne Torkelson won races and championships.

One of the reasons that Nitro Coupes have proved to be so popular is the fact that they almost all use different type bodies and they look like real cars. However they produce low 6 second ETs at 240 mph.
